I have had
an inspirational saying on my desk for the past year
that states “those who have goals succeed because
they know where they are going.” Without setting
goals for yourself you may drift from day to day with
no long-term direction, no clear focus…goals give
you long term vision and short term motivation. While
we all have great ideas, they are just that…an
idea. It takes a commitment and a decision to make a
true goal. So, where does the commiment come from? Why
are some goals attained and others left by the wayside?
The first step in transforming an idea into a goal is
to write it down stating it as a positive statement
(what you want, not what you don’t want). Ensure
it is a SMART goal using the following variables:
S-specific M-measurable
A-achievable R-responsible
(attainable by self) T-timed (specific
time frame)
Once these are satisfied the fun part comes in. Make
the goal as compelling as you can…envision yourself
having achieved it. What do you see, hear and what does
it feel like? Use visual aids, pictures or a collage
placing them where you can see it every day. When a
goal is SMART and compelling you will feel naturally
pulled toward your outcome instead of feeling like you
have to push yourself. Leverage yourself by vocalizing
the goal to your friends, family and associates, drawing
on support from those who will encourage or assist you.
A success coach is an excellent resource as a partner,
sounding board and source of support and encouragement.
Periodically review your goals as life comes at you,
remaining flexible when things do not go according to
plan (the Law of Requisite Variety). One of my clients
shared a great quote with me: “Obstacles are things
a person sees when he takes his eyes off his goals”.
~ E. Joseph Cossman.
My coaching for you is to create the life you want by
setting goals and transforming your ideas into reality!
